Trying to ride the horse--he held his own--when the other kids tried to push their way up, he apparently swatted at them.
A week sure can be a long time in Baby Land. Jack mastered the wave a week or so ago and now waves at everyone trying to get their attention. He also always waves at a picture we have on the wall. I think it is actually the beginning of pointing. He waves frantically at the cat picture until we bring him over to it and he starts smiling and smacking the picture over and over.
He has also, I think, shown the beginnings of clapping. He has always either liked it or been interested when you clap and say "YAYYYYY!" Today, I was playing ball with him and after he threw it back to me, I would say "Yay!" and he would get all excited and wave both arms. He's been doing this the last couple of days. However, today, he finally brought his hands together. We didn't get a clap sound but it is adorable and I am excited that he has finally started!
He also pulls up on anything and everything and loves to stand. He stands constantly in his crib and as I went to pluck him out the other day, I noticed that he has been eating his crib. Brooke told me this would happen and I am even more pleased with the fact that I did not choose the beautiful espresso finished $500 crib from Babies R Us.
Jack's stranger anxiety has fully hit now and now, he not only is not a big fan of parties, he takes some warming up to if you're name is not Mommy, Daddy or Grandma. At his cousin's adorable farm themed birthday party at a petting zoo, Jack did not find any of the dances, animals or people all that great. He watched everything completely serious, and occasionally made a pout face like he was about to cry.
On Friday, Pete and Nikki came over with Maddie. We had higher hopes for this meeting since the first time they met they completely ignored each other. Granted, Maddie was about a month old at the time and sleeping but it still concerned me about their future nuptuals. How can they get married when they don't even look at each other. This time was much better--Jack smacked her right in the face. Maybe that's the baby version of pulling pigtails. Anyway, when Nik and Pete walked in, Jack was in his high chair. They came up and greeted him and he immediately got pouty faced and reached out to me for a hug. It took about 15 minutes but finally Jack could not resist Auntie Nikki's charms and caved, smiling and giggling and playing. We also got the first glimpse at what it might be like to have a second baby. When we were all talking in the room while Nikki was changing Maddie, we weren't paying too much attention to Jack and all the attention in the room was on Maddie. Jack tried to remedy this by waving frantically at his new friends and yelling. Afterwards, we played around on the floor and Jack and Maddie seemed way more interested in each other. They even had their first conversation. Maddie started to cry (really just a squeak--she's a great baby!) and Jack yelled. So for a while we heard, "Ah!" from Maddie followed by an "AH!" from Jack.
We are looking forward to many more playdates--both with Maddie (and her parents, of course)and adult playdates to socialize the little guy. He's such a happy boy that when he is anything less than smiley, it's a BIG change. And while we certainly want him to understand the concept of "Stranger Danger", we want him to realize that that doesn't apply to our friends and family!
